Most websites and articles you come across on the topic of biodiesel stress “Save the Planet” or “Independence from Foreign Oil” as major themes. It’s almost as though the same group of people float from website to website on every topic from electric cars or hydrogen fuel cells to solar power or wind energy and every other alternative fuel and power source in some weird 70’s flashback. Actually, all of those technologies are very neat from a technical standpoint but let’s keep the rhetoric to a minimum and focus on the facts.

Biodiesel isn’t some enviro-religion you have to join, it’s just a neat technology to learn about and play with and make work for you. Technologies that attract a lot of movie star support, smell like hype to me. Everybody starts wearing natural fabrics woven from hemp and puts flowers in their hair, … give me a break! Very few alternative fuels have gained so much attention as quickly as biodiesel. You see stories about it everywhere. But biodiesel is still surprising a lot of people. You can tell they’re surprised because they use exclamation points. “Diesel runs on vegetable oil!” or “Man drives truck powered by cooking oil!” Not long ago I saw another article, “You can run biodiesel engines on filtered coconut oil!” and it struck me that a lot of confusion exists out there about diesel engines.
