Pennsylvania opens biodiesel injection blending facility

by Paul on November 7, 2005

Pennsylvania is stepping up efforts to become one of the leading biodiesel states in the nation with the opening of the biodiesel injection facility, in Highspire, PA. The facility is owned by Independence BioFuels, Inc, a wholesale distributor of biofuels. Injection blending combines biodiesel with regular petroleum diesel or petroleum heating oil into the finished product. The first load of injection blended B5 Bioheat was delivered from the facility to Bernville Quality Fuels of Reading, PA.

Independence BioFuels, Inc. is the first known company on the East Coast and the second known in the nation to make a biodiesel injection blending facility available for petroleum distributors. When injection blended, petroleum and biofuel will combine into one seamless product in the pipeline before reaching the transport vehicle at the terminal. Four lanes available for biofuel injection blending, the Independence BioFuels' facility currently offers soy-based biofuel blends from 2% through 20% for diesel, heating oil and kerosene. Because no biofuel refineries currently exist in PA, this facility is the only point of biofuel distribution in the state, and the implementation of this facility will help to continue developing PA's renewable energy market, and improves the logistics for local distributors who are interested in providing biofuel.

Along with the future development of a new biodiesel production facility in Rouseville, PA, site of the old Pennzoil refinery, this injection plant shows a positive move within the state toward the development of biofuels.
